A ride on a 1913 Henderson is a memorable experience. After retarding the spark with the left hand grip, the engine is started with a few pulls of the crank. Advance the spark, lift the stand, mount the bike, and you're ready to roll.
The clutch is engaged by pulling the lever toward you as you give it a little gas. It's a tall machine, so a bit of tiptoeing may be in order as you get rolling but with a little practice it is a smooth operation. Once moving, there are no gears to change and the Henderson will cruise easily at 40 mph. The 4 cylinder engine's smooth power band means hills can be climbed easily by just rolling on a little more throttle. Period advertisements claim a top speed of 60 mph.
The bike is a joy to ride - just keep your right leg away from the exhaust manifold!
The videos below show an early parking lot practice ride, taken shortly after restoration was completed, and an afternoon spent at a local racetrack with the Horseless Carriage Club of America. |
