The First Trans-Canada Auto Trip

Halifax: August 27, 1912 <<<    >>> Victoria: October 17, 1912

Maps: British Columbia

The 1912 travellers' greatest challenge of all was that of crossing the Rocky Mountains and entering British Columbia. The men slowly made their way up the steady climb to the Crowsnest Pass, then down the other side.

In B.C. they found some of the best roads in Canada, but they also found some of the hardest places to cross. At one point, they had to drive on the railway tracks at night for about 3 hours. At another, they had to load the car on a farmer's raft to float it across the Kootenay River. They even had to take a short detour into the United States one day!

On Vancouver Island, Wilby and Haney visited Port Alberni, the westernmost point on the trip, before finally reaching Victoria on Oct. 16.
