Security on Parliament Hill was increased today as an unusual collection of vehicles descended upon the seat of the Canadian Government.
Reports from the nation's capital appear to indicate that the procession was led by an elderly gentlemen in a 1912 Reo who claimed to be travelling from Halifax to Victoria to deliver 6 bottles of Atlantic water to the Pacific. He further claimed that this strange ritual had been successfully attempted 85 years ago by the little known english writer Thomas Wilby.
The entourage, which also included a 1925 Maxwell, a 1928 Chevrolet, a 1947 Ford truck, and a very dusty motorhome sporting a Speedy Auto Centre banner, circled the public area in front of the parliament buildings twice before heading out onto the street again. Last reports had them heading westward.
It is alleged that the prime minister has announced that he will look into this unusual occurance.
Ottawa was chosen to be Canada's capital in 1858 by Queen Victoria. At that time it was the capital of Upper and Lower Canada which had just joined to form a single colony. Nine years later, when the British North America act formed the Dominion of Canada, Ottawa remained the capital primarily because the capital buildings were already there.
The city is located where the Rideau River meets the Ottawa River. Across the Ottawa river is the city of Hull, Quebec. Together, Ottawa and Hull form the National Capital Region.
The city has many interesting places to visit. The National Arts Centre, the National Gallery, the National Museum of Science, and the National Mueum of Civilization are just a few of the interesting spots to be toured.
Another interesting attraction is the historic Rideau Canal, which was built in 1832 to form a secure military route from Montreal to Kingston. The 196 km route was intended to protect against an American attack, but was never needed. Today the canal is a recreational waterway for sailing and canoeing. In the winter part of it forms an 8 km long skating rink for the people of Ottawa.
