North Bay was originally a camp along the portage route between the Georgian Bay and the Ottawa River. Early explorers and fur traders followed this route which had been used by the First Nations hunters for centuries.
The city is located along a 1.5 km stretch of sandy beach on the shores of Lake Nipissing. It is still a popular spot for hunters, trappers, and fishermen. The skies over North Bay are often busy with aircraft as the city is home to a NORAD base as well as one of the top helicopter training schools in North America. Each year the North Bay Heritage Festival and Air Show features aircraft from all over the world for the many people who come to watch.
Nearby is the town of Corbeil where, in 1934, the famous Dionne quintuplets were born. The five identical girls are the only known set of identical quintuplets ever born. Over the next few years millions of people came to this area to see the "quints" who spent their early years on display for all to see. The original Dionne home has been moved to a new location in North Bay and is now a museum.
Also on this day, Peter Findlay contacted a local school and was permitted to bring the Reo and talk to some of the students. The grades 3 to 6 students of Tweedsmuir School were very interested to hear of both of the cross-country trips and to see the Reo. They listened attentively for about 40 minutes and asked some very astute questions. The school presented Peter with a Tweedsmuir mug, which will be another cherished memory of this day on the 1997 cross-Canada trip.
