The morning was chilly as the Reo set out under clear blue skies. Highway 3b climbs steadily and rises high above the city of Rossland as it passes Red Mountain. The Reo climbed the hill easily and stopped briefly at Nancy Green Summit (elevation 1575 metres) for pictures before beginning the long descent down the other side.
After many kilometres of downhill slopes, beautiful Christina Lake came into view. The Reo was met by members of the Boundary Bandits Car Club as well as the Columbia Chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada. Of special interest was Mr. Lincoln Sandner in his 1914 Overland car. Mr. Sandner is a long-time resident and local historian. The Findlays and John Nicol were welcomed by the Christina Lake Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed a meal at Mama Mitri's restaurant, where the special of the day was 1912 buffalo burgers. Students from Christina Lake Elementary School were also on hand to welcome the Reo and learn about the 1997 cross-Canada tour.
After lunch the Reo was led into Grand Forks. At the edge of town, mayor Brian Taylor met the Reo and led the whole group into town on horseback. At the city museum, local citizens gathered to welcome the travellers and inspect the car. Later in the evening the group was treated to a dinner at the Grand Forks Station restaurant hosted by Mrs. Marion Ashby of the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce.
Grand Forks is located on the Kettle River and has a rich history as a mining ttown. One hundred years ago, when the town was born, there were over 40 mines operating in the area. The city also has had a strong Doukhobor influence. Today the city has many restored buildings and is very proud of its heritage.
The day's drive had been very scenic and interesting and the pathfinders were welcomed warmly in both Christina Lake and Grand Forks.
The view coming over the pass was spectacular.
